Crispus Attucks was a black man who was the first person to die in the Boston Massacre.
In 1966, Bertram A. Fitzgerald started Golden Legacy, an educational comic-book series on black history. Subjects ranged from Toussaint L’Ouverture (issue #1) to Matthew Henson (issue #5) to Martin Luther King (issue #13). I was lucky enough to pick up the one on Crispus Attucks (issue #3), pictured above. Written by Tom Feelings, and illustrated by Feelings and Ezra Jackson, it’s a brilliant lesson in how visual storytelling can make history really connect. Now if only someone would give me a grant to do my own history comics…
The complete set of Golden Legacy comics is only $25 from their online store, or $45 for a bound edition. Money well spent.
